Journalistic moral engagementNarrative strategies in American muckrakingUniversity of South Alabama, USA, jaucoin{at}jaguar1.usouthal.edu The narrative strategies of mid-20th-century investigative journalists who published in leftist American magazines expanded the kinds of truths that could be told. Using specific cases of institutional failure, the journalists maneuvered the message through a variety of narrative techniques, including direct advocacy of alternatives, to the larger question of capitalism's morality. Their style offers an alternative model for American investigative journalists.
